How to wear men's suits

The suit is still the most elegant item of clothing a man can wear so long as its cut, colour, fabric and style suit the occasion, time of day, the season of the year and the climate.

The Cut

By a good cut, we mean the basic pattern that has been used again and again since the 1930’s, irrespective of fashion and trends. The cut of a tailored men's suits should look natural and bring out the best in its wearer. A thin, small boned man should go for suits with a narrow cut and no shoulder padding, narrow lapels and close-fitting trousers. An athletic, broad shouldered man will not require shoulder padding either and the suit should be cut to his natural measurements. If the wearer is a large gentleman, it is even more advisable to avoid anything in the cut that will make him look larger, opting ideally for XXL sizes and king size tailoring.

The Colour

Traditional colours regarded correct for a suit are dark blue, dark gray to very light gray and black. A brown suit should be worn only at the weekend or for sporting occasions.

The Fabric

Todays men's suits are much lighter than those of the past, but there are still considerable differences in the weight and thickness of the material used. You should start by thinking about where you will be wearing the suit, i.e. the climate, temperature and how often you will wear it. If you wear your suit frequently, it is advisable to purchase a machine washable suit as they are usually stain resistant, crease free, durable and extremely comfortable.

Formal Dress

The name Tuxedo stems from Tuxedo Park, New York, where the jacket is said to have been first introduced in 1886. In German speaking countries, it is called a “smoking” and in England it is a “dinner jacket”. “Black tie”, “White tie”, tails or tuxedo are all classic invitations to a formal occasion which always indicates what the guest is expected to wear. As the name suggests, a black bow tie is traditionally worn with a tuxedo and the indication “black tie” means that this is the correct form of evening dress. A white bow tie should be worn with tails, and “white tie” thus indicates this.

The Right Shoes It is often said that a man’s shoes are his most important item of clothing. On most occasions, a man with a decent pair of shoes on his feet will find that his cheap jeans, budget shirts and bargain sweaters will be benevolently overlooked. Suits, sports jackets, ties and overcoats can be bought later. All that matters is to have a classy, well broken in pair of shoes.

Modern Australian fashion

Modern Australia has a unique fashion style that is able to be clearly distinguished from European fashion lines. Whereas European fashion has a more tailored approach, Australian fashion has a more casual approach.

Fashion is distinguished from dress by its nature in that is been fashioned or created, often by hand, and it reflects the prevailing styles in 'polite society' rather than being based on function. Fashion can be defined by colour, cut, cloth, garment type, garment styles and interpretation of looks.

Many of Australia's top designers have been inspired by an extraordinary range of Australian fashion textiles and cultural influences. In turn, Australian creations, such as those by Wayne Cooper, Collette Dinnigan, Akira Isogawa, Lisa Ho, Martin Grant, Carla Zampatti, Easton Pearson, Michelle Jank and Nicola Finetti are in global demand.

WHAT DOES A FASHION DESIGNER DO?

FASHION DESIGNERS create clothing and accessory designs. They may plan the production and marketing of their creations. Designers specialize in one type of garment or accessory such as men's or women's wear, children's garments, swimwear, lingerie, handbags, or shoes. Some high-fashion Designers are self-employed and design for individual clients. They make fashion news by establishing the silhouette, colors, and kinds of materials that will be worn each season. Other self-employed, high-fashion Designers cater to specialty stores or high-fashion department stores. They design original garments as well as follow the established fashion trends. Designers who work for apparel manufacturers do less original work; they adapt fashions set by other Designers for the mass market.

Designers' Assistants in apparel manufacturing are exposed to the fast pace of production schedules while performing routine aspects of the job. Assistant Designers acquire the knowledge of what creations will sell at a profit in an intended market, within a defined price range, at a particular time of the year. They learn the personality of firms, types of stores that buy the merchandise, and the age and tastes of the stores' clientele.

Fashion Designers perform the following tasks:

* Sketch their ideas.
* Draw and cut patterns to create sample garments.
* Select fabric and trimmings.
* Combine basic dressmaking and tailoring principles with flat pattern work and draping techniques.
* Fit and modify the finished garment.
* Arrange showings for press and buyers when the sample garment line is ready.
* Compare merchandise with those of the competitors.
* Keep current on trends by reading trade magazines and attending fashion shows.
* Visit textile showrooms to keep up to date on latest fabrics. A large manufacturer generally has a Head Designer and several assistants. Many small firms do not employ Designers but purchase ready-made designs or copy higher-priced designs.
